These coloring pages are part of my upcoming coloring book companion to The Jaguar and the Cacao Tree. The illustrations are beautifully detailed yet not overdone, so you can make them your own regardless of your age1 or coloring ability.
Each post in the Kids’ Corner section contains one coloring page, downloadable as a 8.5’’ x 11’’ PDF. Meet all of the main characters: Max, Itzel, Luna the Hummingbird, the Great Black Jaguar, the Feathered Serpent, and Doña Victoria. Explore scenes from the book, from the sacred ceremonial circle to the cacao grove. Collect all of the designs!
The coloring pages are available only for paid subscribers. Of course, your kids might not understand what a “paid subscriber” is—nor do they care, trust me. They just want their coloring page already—so let me save you the trouble of having to explain it to them:
ITZEL KAB' BAL'AM
Itzel is the 12-year-old daughter of Don Francisco, the chief beekeeper of K'aax Itzà. When she was a baby, she got lost one day. The whole village frantically searched for her, and finally her grandfather, Don Rigoberto, found her—sleeping against the belly of a black jaguar in the jungle. That was when Don Rigoberto realized the young girl's destiny was greater than anyone had thought.
Itzel’s Maya birth sign is 13 Ix, the sign of the Jaguar. Her nagual also is, naturally, the Jaguar.
Secret background story! Itzel never tells Max this in the book, but about a year before he and his parents come to K’aax Itzà, she had a recurring dream about a hummingbird boy who would visit the forest and help save the sacred DNA of cacao. That’s why she’s stunned when Max starts communicating with Luna the hummingbird—and that’s why she knows he’s the one.
